Terms of Use

1. Acceptance of the Terms of Use

Welcome to chattr. These Terms of Use (“Terms”) are an agreement between you and chattr (“we”, “us”) and govern your use of the chattr website at chattr.art, the chattr iOS app, and related services (together, the “Service”). By creating an account, starting a playthrough or otherwise using the Service, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy, which is part of these Terms.

If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use the Service.

2. Changes to the Terms of Use

We may revise these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page and, for material changes, post a notice in the Service before the change takes effect. Continuing to use the Service after that means you accept the revised Terms. If you do not accept them, stop using the Service and you may delete your account.

3. Definitions

• “Story” means an interactive-fiction setting on chattr, including its title, summary, art, stats and the narrator instructions that drive it. “Community Story” means a Story written and published by another reader.
• “Playthrough” means a single session of a Story that you start or join, made up of one or more Turns.
• “Turn” means one unit of a Playthrough: the Player Input, the narrator’s response, the resulting story state, the suggested choices and any illustration attached to it.
• “Player Input” means anything you type or select in the Service — a choice, an action, your player name, a comment, or a Community Story you write.
• “Narrator” means the AI language-model service that writes each Turn.
• “Art” means illustrations shown in the Service, whether made for a Story in advance or generated for a Turn.
• “Quills”, “Stars” and “chattrbox” have the meanings in section 12.

4. Your Account

You need an account (an email address and password) to play. Give us a real email address you control, keep your password private, and tell us if you think someone else has used your account. You are responsible for activity on your account. One person per account; accounts are not transferable.

You can delete your account at any time in Settings → Account. Deleting it is permanent: it cancels any chattrbox subscription and removes your playthroughs, comments, Community Stories and balances, and unused Quills and Stars are forfeited.

5. Ownership and License

The Service, the Stories (other than Community Stories), the Art, the chattr name and logo, and the software are owned by us or our licensors and are protected by copyright, trademark and other laws. Except for the limited license below, these Terms give you no right, title or interest in them.

Subject to these Terms, we grant you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the Service and to read and play Stories for your own non-commercial use. You may not copy, redistribute, sell or create derivative works from Stories or Art except through the Service’s own share features.

You keep whatever rights you have in your Player Input. You may share and quote your own Playthroughs, provided you keep the Story attribution.

6. The chattr Website and App

The Service is available on the web and as an iOS app; both use the same account. The app loads the current version of the Service, so features can change without an app update. We may add, change or remove features, Stories or Art at any time, and the Service may occasionally be unavailable.

You may not interfere with the Service, probe or test its security without permission, scrape it, reverse engineer it, use bots to play or to earn Quills, or use it to build a competing service or dataset.

7. Conditions of Use

You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service, and sign-up asks for your date of birth to check it. If you are 13 to 17, you give us a parent or guardian’s email address when you sign up and they link their own account to yours; they agree to these Terms for you, decide whether you may comment, write stories or make purchases, and are responsible for any purchases you do make. Stories can include violence, peril and mature themes, but the Service is for safe-for-work fiction only.

When using the Service you agree not to:

• post or steer the Narrator toward sexual content, or anything that sexualises minors;
• submit content that is unlawful, harassing, hateful, or that infringes someone else’s rights;
• harass, threaten or impersonate other players, including in shared Playthroughs and comments;
• put other people’s personal information into the Service;
• upload malware or try to gain unauthorised access to the Service, other accounts or our data;
• abuse rewarded ads, refunds, promotions or bugs to get Quills or Stars you did not earn or buy; or
• use the Service for any commercial purpose without our written permission.

8. Privacy

Our Privacy Policy explains what we collect, how we use it, which providers we share it with (including the Narrator, image, payment, ad and notification providers), and the choices you have.

9. Player Input, Shared Playthroughs and Feedback

Your Player Input is sent to the Narrator to write the next Turn and is stored so you can continue later. You grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to store, process, display and transmit your Player Input to operate, promote within the Service, and improve the Service — for example, showing your comments, your published Community Stories, and your turns to the people you play with.

If you invite people to a Playthrough, or join someone else’s, every member can read the whole Playthrough and see each other’s player names and pictures. Each member’s turns use that member’s own Quills. The person who started a Playthrough can rename or delete it and remove members.

If you send us feedback or ideas, we may use them without restriction or payment to you.

10. AI-Generated Content

Every Turn is written by an AI language model, and many illustrations are generated by an image model. This content is fiction. It is produced automatically, is not reviewed by a person before you see it, and may be inaccurate, inconsistent or unexpectedly intense. It does not reflect our views or those of any model provider, and nothing in a Turn is advice of any kind.

If a Turn, comment or Community Story contains something that should not be there, report it through the Contact page. We may remove Turns, Playthroughs, comments or Stories that break these Terms.

Community Stories are written by members, not by us. They are published only after an automatic content check, which can make mistakes, and we may unpublish any Story at any time. When you publish a Story you confirm it is your own original work and that you have the right to publish it, and you allow other players to read and play it in the Service.

11. Third-Party Services

The Service relies on other companies to work, including AI model providers for the Narrator, an image generation provider, hosting and database providers, Stripe for payments, an email provider, Google for rewarded ads on the website (outside the EU/EEA, UK and Switzerland), and Apple for iOS notifications. They are listed in the Privacy Policy. Your Player Input and the Story context are sent to the Narrator provider on every Turn under that provider’s own terms.

We are not responsible for third-party services, their availability or their policies. Payments are subject to Stripe’s terms, and ads are provided by Google under Google’s terms.

12. Quills, Stars, chattrbox and Payments

Reading, browsing and voting are free, while each Turn costs a Quill and generating an illustration costs a Star. Quills refill over time up to a cap, and on the website, where ads are available, you can earn extra Quills by choosing to watch a rewarded ad, though ads are not available in the iOS app or in the EU/EEA, the UK or Switzerland. Both Quills and Stars can also be bought in packs.

chattrbox is a monthly subscription (price shown before you buy, currently $4.99 per month plus any applicable tax). It removes the Quill cost of Turns, adds a monthly amount of Stars, and lets you write and publish Community Stories. It renews automatically each month until you cancel. On the website you can cancel any time in Settings → Membership or through the billing portal; a subscription bought in the iOS app is cancelled in your Apple ID’s subscription settings, at least 24 hours before it renews. You keep the benefits until the end of the period you paid for, and we do not refund partial months except where the law requires.

On the website, payments are processed by Stripe. In the iOS app, purchases are made through Apple’s in-app purchase and charged to your Apple ID, so Apple’s purchase terms apply to them, and refunds for them are requested from Apple. Prices are shown before you pay and may change for future purchases.

Quills and Stars are a limited license to use features of the Service. They have no cash value, cannot be exchanged for money, transferred or sold, and are not refundable once bought except where the law requires. A Star spent on an illustration that fails or is blocked is returned automatically. We may adjust balances to correct errors or abuse, and Quills and Stars end if your account is deleted or terminated or the Service shuts down. If you think a charge is wrong, contact us before disputing it with your bank.

13. The iOS App and Apple

If you use the chattr app from Apple’s App Store, these additional terms apply:

• These Terms are between you and us, not Apple. We, not Apple, are solely responsible for the app and its content.
• Your license to use the app is limited to Apple-branded devices you own or control, as allowed by the Usage Rules in Apple’s Media Services Terms and Conditions.
• Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the app.
• If the app fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple and Apple will refund the purchase price of the app (if any); to the extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation for the app.
• We, not Apple, are responsible for addressing any claims relating to the app, including product liability claims, claims that it fails to meet legal or regulatory requirements, and consumer protection or privacy claims, and for investigating and defending any claim that the app infringes a third party’s intellectual property.
• You confirm that you are not in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo or designated as a “terrorist supporting” country, and that you are not on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
• Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce them against you.

14. Termination and Suspension

We may suspend or close your account, and remove your content, if you break these Terms, if required by law, or to protect the Service or other players. Where reasonable we will tell you why. If we close your account without cause, we will refund any unused prepaid chattrbox period. You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time. Sections 5, 9, 10, 12 (the nature of Quills and Stars) and 15 to 19 survive termination.

15. Disclaimer of Warranties

THE SERVICE, THE STORIES, THE ART AND EVERY TURN ARE PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE”, WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE OR SECURE, THAT PLAYTHROUGHS WILL BE PRESERVED, OR THAT THE NARRATOR WILL PRODUCE ANY PARTICULAR OUTPUT. SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OF IMPLIED WARRANTIES, SO SOME OF THE ABOVE MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.

16. Limitation of Liability

TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY LOSS OF DATA (INCLUDING LOST PLAYTHROUGHS OR VIRTUAL ITEMS), ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS RELATING TO THE SERVICE WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE TWELVE MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM AND USD 50. NOTHING IN THESE TERMS LIMITS LIABILITY THAT CANNOT BE LIMITED BY LAW.

17. Indemnification

You agree to defend, indemnify and hold us harmless from any claims, damages, losses and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of your Player Input, your use of the Service, or your violation of these Terms or of any law or third-party right.

18. Governing Law; Disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the place where chattr is established, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and any dispute that cannot be resolved informally will be brought in the courts of that place. If you are a consumer, you also keep any protections the law of your home country gives you.

Before filing a claim, you agree to email us at support@chattr.art and make a good-faith attempt to resolve the dispute for at least 30 days.

19. Complete Agreement and Severability

These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the entire agreement between you and us about the Service. If any provision is found unenforceable, it will be limited to the minimum extent necessary and the rest will stay in force. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver of it. You may not assign these Terms; we may assign them as part of a sale or transfer of the Service.
